To sort icons or small icons alphabetically, hold the Option key down while pulling down the Finder’s Special menu. Clean Up Window changes to Clean Up by Name. Hold the Shift key down instead and you’ll see Clean Up Selection.
Easier Viewing
If you find the Finder default font size (Geneva 9) too small for comfortable reading, use a larger size. System 7 lets you do this with the View control panel. System 6 requires the public domain program Layout (which is incorporated into Norton Utilities).
System 7 Finder Shortcuts
For a visual reminder of System 7’s shortcuts, select Finder Shortcuts from the Balloon Help menu. You’ll also find that more and more programs give you access to their help screens this way.
Quick Word Tip: Word 5 Spelling Checker
Use the Preferences command under the Tools menu to switch off Always Suggest for Spelling. This saves a lot of time when you’re doing a spelling check. While the checker is running, use your keyboard for faster selection of these commands:
Add Command-A
Suggest Command-S
Change Command-C
Options Command-O
Close Command-.
